Academics & Curriculum
West Branch Rose City Schools aligns its curriculum and assessments with the Michigan Department of Education’s Common Core K-12 Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, which outline what students should know and be able to do at each grade level to be prepared for college and careers. The district also follows Michigan’s specific standards for Social Studies and Science, including the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Through a continuous improvement cycle, guided by the MICIP framework and PLC+ practices, the district systematically reviews and refines courses, develops high-quality assessments, and selects instructional materials and resources to ensure rigorous alignment with state standards and Michigan graduation requirements. These efforts are designed to promote consistency, equity, and excellence in teaching and learning across all grade levels.
West Branch Rose City Schools is dedicated to preparing every student for lifelong success through a rigorous, relevant K-12 curriculum that fosters responsibility, engagement, and global citizenship. We believe strong schools build strong communities, and our strategic plan, guided by the MICIP framework, drives continuous improvement to ensure academic excellence for all learners.
Common Core Standards
In June 2010, the State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as the new standards for K-12 mathematics and English language arts, replacing Michigan’s previous Grade Level Content Expectations and High School Content Expectations. These standards establish clear and consistent learning goals, build a progression of knowledge and skills toward the College and Career Readiness Standards, and enable Michigan to collaborate with other states to provide curricular support for schools and educators. In addition to the CCSS for ELA and mathematics, Michigan has established K-12 Social Studies Standards and adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to ensure a comprehensive, rigorous, and cohesive framework for student learning across all core academic areas.
